National Ethical Guidelines review

The Ministry of Health has established a Working Party to develop a draft set of National Ethical Guidelines for Health and Disability Research.

The new Guidelines document will incorporate both ethical standards (minimum required practice) and ethical guidelines (recommended best practice) and will take a risk-based approach.

The new Guidelines will replace two sets of guidelines issued in 2012 – Ethical Guidelines for Intervention Studies and Ethical Guidelines for Observational Studies: Observational Research, Audits and Related Activities.  The new Guidelines are intended to be used by all health and disability research practitioners and by both institutional and regulatory ethics committees.

It is intended to complete the draft within the 2017 calendar year, with public consultation planned in early 2018.
